The Waldrif community met and took a decisive step in their battle against the pending coal mine, Glubay. Frustrated with the disingenuous actions of Glubay and their consultants, the community has come together to voice their dissatisfaction and seek a solution to protect their homes and surrounding environment.
In a zoom meeting held recently, homeowners documented their grievances and unanimously expressed their dissatisfaction with Glubay's handling of the situation. The company's actions are said to be dubious at best and frequently changes consultants to create confusion, and disharmony, which have only further eroded
trust between Glubay and the Waldrif community.
To shed light on their concerns and explore avenues for support, the community invited representatives from Macua (Mining Affected Communities United in Action) to present their organisation and assess how best to they can be of assistance. Gudani Tshikota a paralegal from Macua Advisory office, David Nene and Gift Radebe, the National Deputy Secretary of Macua, represented the organisation during the meeting.
After recapping and reviewing event prior to covid, recent community meeting and enlightening presentation by the Macua representatives, the community reached a consensus on the way forward. They decided to establish a community "branch" dedicated to addressing the challenges posed by the Glubay mine. Seeking volunteers for this critical role, Danie Breytenbach and Sibongile Pesa stepped forward to spearhead the efforts.
The formation of this marks a significant milestone in the Waldrif community's mobilisation against Glubay. Through collective action, they aim to safeguard their investment in property, environment and preserve the well-being of future generations. The volunteers, Danie Breytenbach and Sibongile Pesa, will play instrumental roles in coordinating and establishing a roadmap for the community's fight against the mine.
The Waldrif community urges all concerned citizens, local organisations, businesses, surrounding communities to rally behind their cause.
