The Taste of Home – San Deck and Warmth
The taste of home. The taste of childhood, of friends playing under the sky, with no care in the world. Eating is not just about taste; all your five senses are involved. A study found out that 53% of people tend to remember how the food tastes as they travelled, and another study discovered that our brains associate food memories with a time and place. Chef Shimmy, the hero behind the new menus really hit home with this one!

As soon as you enter Sandton Sun, The San Deck Restaurant, located in Sandton, you see a lit fireplace at the far end of the rooftop. The fireplace is surrounded by greenery, making you feel like you are right outside your backyard.

The restaurant is absolutely breathtaking when the sun set, making the rooftop glow in golden, orange and red hue. The restaurant has truly become a home for many, with a menu that has travelled the world. The customers are spoiled for choice, and they love it! They are going to love it even more because Sandton Sun launched new menus.

I visited the restaurant on a warm Wednesday morning and was guided to the rooftop where my eyes tried to take in the clear blue scenery and greeted old and new friends. (Why Wednesday, you might wonder. Well, it is the middle of the week, and many people go out unwind and gather energy to get through the rest of the week. The dishes were served with their own wine, and sparkling water (for people like me who don’t drink). For anyone who doesn’t drink, fear not, non-alcoholic beverages are available.

We were served with Stained Glass Rose by Ken Forrester upon arrival. The starters were served with Diemersdal Estate Cape Town Gruner Veltliner (the only words I could pronounce were Cape Town…)

The soup had my whole heart, in fact it stood out to me out of all the dishes we were served. The soup tasted like childhood. It complimented the weather so well! Kids grow up and at some point, they must find their own way. No matter how far they go, they will always think of home, and it was a gift to feel peace in such a busy society.

What really stood out from the menu was how it was set out like a childhood timeline. The starters (minus the wine) told the stories of growing up and all the adventure that came with it. The main courses, which consisted of Potato & butternut gnocchi, Seabass, Grilled sole and Grilled salmon all served with Swartberg Wingerde Holism Piekeniersloof Palomino. The Rich wine braised oxtail and Chalmar Beef rib-eye were served with Great Heart Franschhoek Cabernet Franc. The main course was like embracing your twenties, thirties and so on. The phase where life choices are made, friendships either break or evolve; people try to find out the treasures of life. It is certainly not the easiest phase, but it is the most important one.

Then the desserts are a full circle; one has tasted life, the bitter, the sweet, the savoury and everything in between. Desserts are like a journey back home and these desserts were Sticky toffee pudding, Raspberry and mango panacotta and finally, a chocolate marquise all served with De Krans Cape Vintage (you can opt not to have it with alcohol).
