The Importance of Community Health
The Fab. Fit. Fun Health & Fitness Club (NPC) was founded by three women to help people of Norwood, Orange Grove, and surrounding areas lead a healthy lifestyle. The organisation accommodates everyone who enjoys exercising but is unable to afford to exercise at gyms. The organisation hosted a ZINAKEKELE COLOUR RUN WALK/FUN on the 21st of March and the organisation has so much more in store.

The Fab. Fit. Fun Health & Fitness Club (NPC) was founded by three women, Amanda (Mposh)  Nkalitshana, Zimkhita (Zee) Matshabe, and Thembela Ramara on the 12th of August 2022. The aim of creating the organisation was to encourage a healthy lifestyle and enhance the physical as well as mental well-being of the community of Orange Grove, Norwood, and surrounding areas. On the 21st of March, the organisation hosted an event ‘ZINAKEKELE’, meaning ‘take care of yourself’. The organisation has fun moments but also ensures that serious issues such as Gender-Based Violence (GBV), substance abuse, and insecurities, among other issues, need to be tackled in today’s society. “We fight Gender-Based Violence by assisting the victim and sending them to the relevant stakeholders. These stakeholders include the Social Crime prevention at SAPS, social workers, and community ward counselors. We send some victims to Life Line,” Nkalithshana says. NPC extends its gratitude to partners that contributed to the success of the event such as the Norwood SAPS, Norwood Community Police Forum (NCPF), and Life Line. The event catered to kids, adults, and seniors, ensuring inclusivity and diversity. The organisation also visits schools to encourage self-love and confidence in their own skin. The people who have joined the organisation had nothing but good feedback. One of the members had been dealing with depression but saw a significant change after joining the organisation. “Last year was not the best for me. I suffered from a lack of confidence and depression. When I was told about the gym, I was not interested but I decided to give it a try. When I came for the first time, I was surprised at how nice everyone was. I was consistent with going to the gym and slowly started to gain my confidence back. I would like to thank our instructors for being patient with us and actually doing their best to help,” states the member. One of the male members had this to say, “As one of the few males, the first time I came, I felt a bit out of place. I thought it was an all-women’s thing, so it was weird for me. Nobody made me feel out of place, everyone treated me like family (even got a personal text from one of the members, encouraging me to come back again). I appreciate that. I am flopping there at the back, but nonetheless, I am trying to aim for progress, not perfection. Thank you, everyone.”

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) advances at an extremely fast pace, many people, especially seniors may feel lonely, even young people feel it. For some people, the AI era is a lonely one, and that is where companionship especially community connectedness or community health plays a significant role. Community health plays a role in making a connection between the social and healthcare of individuals. Unfortunately, not many people are aware of this. Being actively involved in community activities promotes healthy living, prevents high levels of isolation, and greatly benefits those involved because community health is linked with individual well-being.

Those interested in joining can do so on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 16:30 - 19:00 at Paterson Park Recreation Centre. NPC has exciting events coming up that everyone can join; on the 8th of June 2023, there will be a ‘Glow In The Dark Thursday.’ It’s an event that promotes positive mental health and people shining their best through the darkest of storms. On the 18th of July, there will be a charity event to commemorate Mandela Day. On the 9th of August, there will be an event at Norwood Mall to demonstrate what the organisation is about. The 12th of August 2023 will be the official launch of the Fab. Fit. Fun Health & Fitness Club.
