In a major push to crack down on rampant crime in Johannesburg's central business district, the Gauteng Provincial Government is unleashing a high-tech offensive with the launch of an extensive CCTV camera network. On Tuesday, Premier Panyaza Lesufi will spearhead the rollout of surveillance cameras along the notoriously dangerous Small Street, an area long plagued by muggings and robberies.
The launch marks a significant milestone in the province's intensified efforts to combat lawlessness and enhance public safety through the strategic deployment of cutting-edge technologies. Since April 2023, over 150 CCTV cameras have been installed across various regions in Gauteng, providing law enforcement with crucial monitoring capabilities.
"These cameras represent our steadfast dedication to restoring a sense of security for all who call our vibrant city home, as well as those who visit for business or leisure," Premier Lesufi stated ahead of the launch. "By harnessing the power of technology, we aim to deter criminal activities and enable swift responses from our law enforcement agencies."
