After a year’s break, the Parktown Singers will be back in front of audiences on 7 and 8 June at Northwards House in Parktown. Over the past eight years, this Johannesburg-based a cappella group has built up a loyal following among Gautengers who appreciate its musical skill as well as its varied repertoire.
The Parktown Singers are Megan Holman (soprano), Cora Hoexter (alto), Billy Joubert (tenor) and Andrew Marais (bass).
“2024 was an enforced sabbatical for us as Megan gave birth to her second son, and Andrew was deeply involved in the election,” says Billy Joubert, who directs the group. “But we’re back now and we have been rehearsing a great mix of old favourites and new material.”
The Parktown Singers perform a wide range of unaccompanied choral music: everything from madrigals to jazz standards, not forgetting pop, ballads and show tunes. Entitled “On a clear day”, this concert series is no exception. The June 2025 programme has something for everyone. Audiences can expect Broadway numbers, delightful jazz classics, arrangements of much-loved hits by artists such as the Beatles, James Taylor and Billy Joel, and new as well as familiar material by composer Billy Joubert.
Because the quartet performs entirely unaccompanied and unplugged, a Parktown Singers’ concert offers a uniquely intimate musical experience. The magnificent main hall at Northwards House is the perfect space in which to appreciate the skill with which each individual voice part contributes to the carefully blended whole.
The musical experience is complemented by opportunities to mingle over delicious snacks and drinks before the performance and during the interval. The concert on Saturday 7 June is at 18h00 for 1830 and the Sunday concert on 8 June at 15h00 for 15h30. Both concerts will feature savoury bites before the programme starts and sweet treats during the interval. Drinks including wine, water, juice and tea/ coffee will be available at both concerts —all included in the cover price.
“Socialising and soaking up the history and ambiance of Northwards House, not to mention the spectacular views to the north, are all part of what we hope will be a memorable event,” Joubert concludes.
Tickets are R220 for Saturday’s concert, R200 on the Sunday, and may be reserved by e-
