Matric Results 2022


Nerves are rattling as the most important day for the Matric Class of 2022. Today we will see how hard work, sweat, and tears will pay off for the brilliant minds of Class 2022.


We asked Jacqui O'Sullivan Head of MTN Foundation about hosting the 2022 Matric results at MTN Innovation Hub. The MTN Foundation has a long-standing relationship with the Department of Education and spends roughly R54 million a year mostly on Education. MTN foundation runs different projects right through the year. This day is all about celebrating young brilliant minds.


A heartwarming interview with a humble Top SASL HL Achiever. Sithokozile Luthuli from Kwathintwa School For The Deaf, KZN speaks about her difficult road and how it made her resilient in life. Her hearing disability did not hinder but motivated her to become a better version of herself and overcome any obstacle in her way. She is in second place as Top SAL HL Achiever for 2022. Third is Chukwudi Hoka, Kwathintwa School for The Deaf, KZN, and first place, is Bongiwe Mkhatshwa, Fildelfia Secondary School, Gauteng.

The DG Technical Briefing gave insight into what happened behind the scene of the National Senior Certificate Examinations. The Basic Education sector consists of The Department of Basic Education is national. There are 9 Provincial Education Departments, 75 Education Districts, 889 Circuit Offices, 24 894 Schools, 22 740 Public Schools, and 2 154 Independent Private Schools. 


The Schooling system consists of 13 419 971 learners, 450 993 educators, and 24 871 schools, with the official languages, English, isiZulu, isiXhosa, IsiNdebele, Afrikaans, siSwati, Sepedi, Sesptho, Setswana, Tshevenda, Xitsonga, South African Sign Language.


A total of 752 003 Full-Time candidates enrolled to write the NSC examination. Numbers increased (725 146) than the previous year 2021 (703 599). An interesting but alarming phenomenon occurred when 422 478 girls entered the NSC examination and only 329 522 boys, this means that 92 956 more girls entered the NSC examination. 326 894 girls passed the NSC examinations compared to 253 661 boys passed. 161 235 girls attained admission to Bachelor Studies compared to 117 579 boys. 65% of distinctions were attained by girl students. Subjects such as Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Mathematics, and Physical Science. These subjects are mainly seen as male-dominated subjects.

Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga at the NSC 2022


According to Minister of Basic Education Mrs. Angie Motshekga, they have printed 162 sets of question papers, 10.4 million question papers, and 9.8 million scripts. They delivered countrywide to 6 904 secured examination centers. There were 73 000 invigilators on duty, 52 000 markers were appointed, and 187 secured marking centers.


Mrs. Angie is happy to inform the nation that on Monday 16 January 2023, Umalusi, our Quality Council in General and Further Education and Training, declared that – 


The examinations were administered largely in accordance with the Regulations Pertaining to the Conduct, Administration, and Management of the NSC. The irregularities identified during the writing and marking of the examinations were not systemic, and therefore, did not compromise the overall credibility and integrity of the November 2022 NSC examinations administered by the DBE. The Executive Committee of Council, therefore, approved the release of the DBE November 2022 NSC examination results ...


The minister states that "The 2022 NSC overall pass rate has reached the 80.1%, (compared with 76.4% in 2021) – an improvement of 3.7% from the pass rate achieved by the Class of 2021. This represents a record of five hundred and eighty thousand, five hundred and fifty five (580 555) candidates, who passed the 2022 NSC examinations – an improvement of 7.9% passes by number, achieved by the Class of 2021."



Top achievements of the province


  • The Free State is the leading province at 88.5%, an increase of 2.8% from 2021.


  • Gauteng achieved 84.4%, an increase of 1.6% from 2021.


  • KwaZulu-Natal, the best-improved province, achieved 83.0%, an increase of 6.2% from 2021.


  • Western Cape achieved 81.4%, an increase of 0.2% from 2021.


  • North West achieved 79.8%, an increase of 1.6% from 2021.


  • The third best-improved province, is the Eastern Cape, with an achievement of 77.3%, an increase of 4.2% from 2021.


  • Mpumalanga achieved 76.8%, a 2.9% increase from 2021.


  • Northern Cape achieved 74.2%, a 2.7% increase from 2021.


  • The second best-improved province, is Limpopo, with an achievement of 72.1%, a 5.3% increase from 2021.


Top district-level performances in the country 


  • First, is Motheo in the Free State, with 90.8%.


  • Second, is Fezile Dabi in the Free State, with 90.4%.


  • Third, is Johannesburg West in Gauteng, with 89.7%.


  • Fourth, is Tshwane South in Gauteng, with 89.0.


  • Fifth, is Gauteng North, Gauteng, with 87.7%.


  • Sixth, is Xhariep in the Free State, with 87.5%.


  • Seventh, is Thabo Mafutsanyana in the Free State, with 87.3%.


  • Eighth, is Ugu in KwaZulu-Natal, with 87.2%.


  •  Nineth, is Umkhanyakude in KwaZulu-Natal, with 86.3%.


  • Tenth, is Johannesburg North in Gauteng, with 86.2%.



Top district-level performances 

 

  • Eastern Cape, Alfred Nzo West at 82.7%; ranked 29th nationally. 


  • Free State, Motheo at 90.8%; is 1st nationally. 


  •  Gauteng, Johannesburg West; with 89.7%3rd nationally. 


  • KwaZulu-Nata, Ugu with 87.2%; is ranked 8th nationally. 


  • Mogalakwena, Limpopo at 78.3%; and is ranked 50th nationally. 


  • Bohlabelo, Mpumalanga, with 79.3%; and is ranked 45th nationally. 


  • Bojanala Platinum, North West, with 81.4%; and is ranked 37th nationally. 


  • ZF Mgcwawu, Northern Cape, with 83.8%; and is ranked 21st nationally.

As the statistics are in for the Matric 2022 we turned our focus to Gauteng Schools, in the Vaal Triangle. Principal Adel van der Merwe speaks about the school passing rate, the Matric's resilience, and how the school is a diverse and holistic school, which is a safe environment for the students.
