American Cardinal Prevost Elected as Pope Leo XIV: A Moment for Prayer as New Pontificate Begins
As white smoke billowed above the Sistine Chapel today, history was made with the election of Cardinal Francis Roberto Prevost, the first American pope. Emerging onto St. Peter's balcony, he announced his papal name: Leo XIV.

As the white smoke billows signaling the end of the debate and selection of the new Pope, Cardinal Francis Roberto Prevost, an American, let us take moment and offer heartfelt prayers for this man who stands at the dawn of a profound ministry.

Entrusted with the responsibility of leading the global Catholic community, he embarks on this sacred journey, "leaving behind his name and small community" to choose a new name, Pope Leo XIV, that signify his fresh start within this universal role.

He too is but a man who will step onto a path of selfless service, carrying the weight of Peter's office and embracing the cross of leadership.

May our prayers be in ernest and grant him strength, wisdom, and unwavering faith as he navigates the challenges ahead, offering guidance and compassion to a world in need. He has chosen a life of sacrifice.
