Gauteng Launches High-Tech CCTV Blitz to Combat Crime on Johannesburg’s Notorious Small Street
In a major push to crack down on rampant crime in Johannesburg's central business district, the Gauteng Provincial Government is unleashing a high-tech offensive with the launch of an extensive CCTV camera network. On Tuesday, Premier Panyaza Lesufi will spearhead the rollout of surveillance cameras along the notoriously dangerous Small Street, an area long plagued by muggings and robberies. The launch marks a significant milestone in the province's intensified efforts to combat lawlessness and enhance public safety through the strategic deployment of cutting-edge technologies. Since April 2023, over 150 CCTV cameras have been installed across various regions in Gauteng, providing law enforcement with crucial monitoring capabilities. "These cameras represent our steadfast dedication to restoring a sense of security for all who call our vibrant city home, as well as those who visit for business or leisure," Premier Lesufi stated ahead of the launch. "By harnessing the power of technology, we aim to deter criminal activities and enable swift responses from our law enforcement agencies."

In a bold move aimed at enhancing public safety, the Gauteng Provincial Government is ramping up its fight against lawlessness and criminal activities plaguing the streets of Johannesburg's central business district. On Tuesday, May 21st, 2024, Premier Panyaza Lesufi will lead the launch of a comprehensive CCTV camera network along the notorious Small Street, an area long grappled with a high prevalence of muggings and robberies.

This launch is part of the provincial government's multifaceted approach to intensifying crime prevention efforts through the strategic deployment of cutting-edge technologies. Since April 2023, over 150 cameras have been strategically installed across various regions within Gauteng, bolstering law enforcement capabilities and providing a much-needed boost to public security.

"The installation of these CCTV cameras represents our unwavering commitment to restoring a sense of safety and security for all who live, work, and visit our vibrant city," Premier Lesufi stated. "By leveraging the power of technology, we aim to create a deterrent for criminal activities and ensure swift responses from our law enforcement agencies."

The Gauteng government's proactive stance against crime extends beyond the CCTV initiative. In February 2024, a landmark partnership was announced with Vumacam, a leading provider of extensive camera networks across the province. This collaboration grants immediate access to over 6,000 existing cameras, further enhancing the surveillance capabilities in high-risk areas, townships, informal settlements, business districts, schools, and other public spaces.

As the province forges ahead with its ambitious crime-fighting efforts, residents and visitors alike can look forward to a heightened sense of security and a more robust response to unlawful activities. The launch of the CCTV cameras on Small Street marks a significant step towards reclaiming the streets and fostering a safer environment for all.
