In a bold move aimed at enhancing public safety, the Gauteng Provincial Government is ramping up its fight against lawlessness and criminal activities plaguing the streets of Johannesburg's central business district. On Tuesday, May 21st, 2024, Premier Panyaza Lesufi will lead the launch of a comprehensive CCTV camera network along the notorious Small Street, an area long grappled with a high prevalence of muggings and robberies.

This launch is part of the provincial government's multifaceted approach to intensifying crime prevention efforts through the strategic deployment of cutting-edge technologies. Since April 2023, over 150 cameras have been strategically installed across various regions within Gauteng, bolstering law enforcement capabilities and providing a much-needed boost to public security.

"The installation of these CCTV cameras represents our unwavering commitment to restoring a sense of safety and security for all who live, work, and visit our vibrant city," Premier Lesufi stated. "By leveraging the power of technology, we aim to create a deterrent for criminal activities and ensure swift responses from our law enforcement agencies."

The Gauteng government's proactive stance against crime extends beyond the CCTV initiative. In February 2024, a landmark partnership was announced with Vumacam, a leading provider of extensive camera networks across the province. This collaboration grants immediate access to over 6,000 existing cameras, further enhancing the surveillance capabilities in high-risk areas, townships, informal settlements, business districts, schools, and other public spaces.
