In a dramatic showdown on the notorious N12 stretch between Kliprivier and Xavier off-ramp, SAPS's anti-kidnapping task force put an end to the reign of a hardened criminal. This individual, already out on bail for vehicular theft and car hijacking, met their demise in a hail of bullets.
The operation, orchestrated by a formidable lineup of SAPS counter intelligence units, visible policing, detectives, and private security, was in hot pursuit of suspects implicated in the abduction of Benoni tycoon Shamshudeen Faki.
Faki, a 68-year-old magnate, fell prey to kidnappers at his place of business on May 11, 2024. The abductors swiftly demanded a staggering sum, exacting millions from the beleaguered family. Tragically, it's suspected that Faki perished while in the clutches of his captors.
His lifeless body was cruelly discarded in Dalpark, Johannesburg, where it was discovered by a vigilant Community Policing Forum patroller on May 13, 2024, prompting an immediate police response.
The task force, fueled by intelligence leads, tracked down one of the prime suspects to the N12 corridor, where a fierce exchange of gunfire erupted on the evening of May 14, 2024.
Among the possessions seized from the deceased culprit were Mr. Faki's identification documents, a siren light for vehicular authority simulation, and licensed plates utilized in the orchestration of the kidnapping. Additionally, authorities confiscated two firearms—a pistol and a revolver—presumably used to enforce their criminal enterprise.
This malefactor's rap sheet reads like a catalog of chaos, with ties to no less than 29 cases of vehicular theft and car hijacking, rendering him a veritable scourge on society. His partners-in-crime, involved in the abduction of Mr. Faki, remain at large, pursued relentlessly by law enforcement.
The apprehension of this suspect marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against kidnapping for ransom, a scourge that has plagued South Africa. Over the past two years, law enforcement efforts have resulted in the arrest of a staggering 250 individuals implicated in similar nefarious activities.
